The CSST…what is it anyway?

Despite the fact that it has existed for many years, the CSST still remains rather unknown. If the CSST logo brings work accidents to mind, few people really know this organization’s mission. Yet, the commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail was set up to protect workers with a view primarily for the elimination of dangers for their health, their safety and their physical integrity at the source.

Let’s take a quick look at the history of the CSST

The CSST was created in 1980, after the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) came into effect. This Act gave rise to a Commission with the exclusive competency to manage the occupational health and safety plan.

The CSST is managed by a parity board of directors made up of unions and employers.

The mission of the CSST is to offer services of prevention and inspection which are embodied in:

  • Support of workers and employers in their steps to eliminate at the source the hazards present in the workplace ;
  • Inspection of workplaces;
  • Promotion of occupational health and safety.

The CSST also sees to the application of the Act respecting industrial accidents and occupational diseases (AIAOD), which stipulates the compensation for employment injuries and the consequences resulting from them for workers.

Compensation has two component, indemnification and rehabilitation :

  • Indemnification of workers who have suffered an employment injury;
  •  Rehabilitation of workers who, due to their employment injury, suffer a permanent impairment to their physical or mental integrity and who must live with functional limitations.

The CSST must therefore pursue the objectives it gave itself at the time it was created and give full effect to the words “prevention” and “rehabilitation”.

It is important that every one of us denounce dangerous situations and quickly report any injury that occurs at work.
