FIQ (Fédération Interprofessionnelle de la santé du Québec)

The Federation is 20 years old!

On December 2, 1987, the Fédération des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec – FIIQ opened its founding Convention stating high and loud that it could rely on “the wealth of its past and the strength of its future”. The wealth of its past since, at the time, the Federation was the fruit of the merger of the three nursing federations, and the strength of its future since as a new federation many new challenges lay ahead.

Once again, 20 years later, the Federation can proudly state that it can count on the wealth of its past and the strength of its future. This wealth stems not only from nurses, the initial members, but also from the other care professionals who have joined our ranks in the past years. The future is just as full of challenges and the Federation will face up to these with the energy, the determination and the will of winners.

Over the years, the Federation’s path has been marked by struggles to wage, actions to undertake, issues to defend, gains to make — in short many small and large events. It has won an increasingly large place for the care professionals it represents, but also for the population of Quebec who understands that its demands are aimed at improving health care and services.

At work and in their personal life, the members of the Federation have very different working experiences, in institutions with specific missions or in regions with particular characteristics. However, this diversity gives the Federation a more accurate portrait of the actual working and living conditions of all care professionals in Quebec and, thus, it enables it to organize interventions which take these into consideration.

The improvement of the working conditions, better recognition and enhanced value of the work of care professionals necessarily depend on their determination, on their belonging to the FIQ, and on the credibility of the organisation. The strength of the union movement resides in its capacity to wage struggles in unity.

The Federation is proud of its 20 years of experience which are a witness to its power of influence, and it is ready for twenty more years!
