Close to 14,000 people denounce cuts to the MUHC

“The Health Minister can no longer deny reality, he needs to massively reinvest in the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Over 120 million dollars was cut from the MUHC budget since 2012. These cuts have major impacts on the quality of care and work of healthcare professionals.” This is why Denyse Joseph, President of the Union of Nursing and Cardio-Respiratory Professionals of the MUHC (FIQ), presented a petition with nearly 14,000 signatures to Minister Gaétan Barrette today. Ms. Joseph was accompanied by the CAQ Members for Montarville and Repentigny, Nathalie Roy and Lise Lavallée.

Some of the consequences of the cuts and poor decisions:

  • The elimination of 200 vacant healthcare positions despite the teams’ excessive workload;
  • Increase in care units under strain with no solutions proposed or financing allocated to resolve the situations;
  • Lack of financing required to provide care at the MUHC;
  • Increase in wait times in the emergency room due to a shortage of beds for patients;

“The MUHC should be a model of health care provision. It’s a world-renowned university health care centre abandoned by the government and left to fend for itself. This situation cannot go on. We demand immediate action and financing that reflects the MUHC’s level of care,” said Denyse Joseph.
