Is filling the vacant positions a prerequisite before discussing safe healthcare professional-to-patient ratios as of now?


If we believe the government, YES!

In a press conference on May 19th, Mr. Legault stated that before demanding safe ratios, the many vacant positions must be filled first and they haven’t found any takers. He believes the demand for healthcare professional-to-patient ratios is theoretical, if no one wants to fill the vacant positions.

Moreover, he says that hiring new beneficiary attendants will relieve the nurses’ work and the solution is to increase salaries as an incentive to encourage full-time work.

Mr. Legault is right when he says that to staff the positions, they have to be appealing. However, is it true to say that it is a prerequisite before implementing safe ratios, or is it not the contrary?

The main objective of safe ratios is to create a work environment in which healthcare professionals can provide safe, quality care, and do it in a healthy and stimulating climate. This is the result seen in countries where ratios were implemented, and it is also what happened in Québec where ratios projects were conducted: an end of MOT, employees who are more motivated and happy at work, better quality and more humane care.

Stabilizing the work teams, ending MOT and implementing safe ratios are the real means that will make full-time positions appealing to the healthcare professionals.
