The FIQ Writes to the Collège des médecins About Collective Prescriptions

On May 31, 2017, FIQ President Régine Laurent wrote to the Collège des médecins’ President and CEO, Dr. Charles Bernard, to inform him of our deep disappointment regarding the directive to end collective prescriptions covered by the nurses’ right to prescribe.

In a letter to Mr. Bernard, Ms. Laurent reminded him that nurse prescribing was an important step forward for the accessibility and continuity of nursing services. The decision to end collective prescriptions “will affect a lot of patients by depriving them of quick access to primary health care in a very strained health network.”

Ms. Laurent also said she was concerned that this decision was made without conducting a prior evaluation to analyze the impacts it would have on the work organization in centres of activity. She is therefore asking the Collège des médecins to “end its policy to withdraw collective prescriptions” or, at least, “to put it on hold until the situation can be re-evaluated once a critical mass of nurses has the right to prescribe.”
