They find themselves in an insidious work crisis spiral caused by the government\u2019s political choices (see image above).[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][\/vc_tta_accordion][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_tta_accordion section_title_tag=&#8221;h6&#8243; shape=&#8221;square&#8221; active_section=&#8221;0&#8243; collapsible_all=&#8221;true&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1734103245162{border-top-width: 1.5em !important;background-color: #EAEAEA !important;border-top-style: solid !important;border-color: #009FE3 !important;}&#8221;][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Government\u2019s political choices&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1734103290345-08672b90-67fc&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]In 2022, the total workforce in health and social services in the public and private sectors was 35% higher than in 1991, and this takes into account population growth and ageing.* Yet, the government at the time called the situation a workforce surplus.**<\/p>\n<p>Today, the government is shirking its responsibility for the political choices it made that harmed the health network. The number hasn\u2019t stopped rising in the last 10 years.\u201d** If we compare Qu\u00e9bec to other Canadian provinces, the ratio of nurses per inhabitant is generally better in Qu\u00e9bec. All things considered, Quebec faced the pandemic with 13% less nurses than in 1992. This situation has been made worse by the development of the private sector. In 1992, 85% of nurses worked in the public network whereas in 2022, only 72% did.*<\/p>\n<p>More than a &#8220;labour shortage,&#8221; Quebec is experiencing an exodus of nurses to the private sector as a result of the government&#8217;s actions and policy choices.<\/p>\n<p><em>*Anne Plourde, Mythes et r\u00e9alit\u00e9 de la p\u00e9nurie de main-d\u2019\u0153uvre en sant\u00e9 et services sociaux au Qu\u00e9bec, mai 2024, LaRISSS, IRIS, page 10.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][\/vc_tta_accordion][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_tta_accordion section_title_tag=&#8221;h6&#8243; shape=&#8221;square&#8221; active_section=&#8221;0&#8243; collapsible_all=&#8221;true&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1734103245162{border-top-width: 1.5em !important;background-color: #EAEAEA !important;border-top-style: solid !important;border-color: #009FE3 !important;}&#8221;][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Absence and exodus of healthcare professionals&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1734103475709-9cc1782c-6d29&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Considering the increase in the number of nurses per 1,000 inhabitants, where are the nurses missing from the public network?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the private sector because they earn a higher wage and because there is a more reasonable workload.<\/li>\n<li>Working part time to avoid burnout.<\/li>\n<li>On sick leave because of the toxic work climate and work overload.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The nurse shortage is caused by the work crisis. The FIQ has the same findings for all nursing and cardio-respiratory care professionals.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][\/vc_tta_accordion][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]By hiding behind the supposed \u201clabour shortage,\u201d the government is looking to avoid accountability. We aren\u2019t buying it!<\/p>\n<p>It is possible to put an end to the work crisis healthcare professionals are going through. Healthcare professionals have several solutions: stabilize care teams, eliminate the work overload, ensure expertise is respected, etc. In short, work and practice conditions must be improved.
