What has changed in our working conditions? What challenges have we faced? Nothing beats a timeline for providing an overview of the situation*.<\/p>\n<p>There has been good and bad, for sure! It is up to us to learn from the past in order to demand better for the future.<\/p>\n<p><em>*Salaries and workweeks are different from one job title to another and are not uniform for the periods indicated. The amounts are approximate and aim to provide an order of magnitude based on the basic salary in the last echelon, when data is available. The nurse job title was used to identify the salary of a nurse.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4>0-1927<\/h4>\n<h5>Charity and vocation<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Annual salary: $0 to $300 (care work is mainly voluntary)<\/li>\n<li>70-hour workweek<\/li>\n<li>Regular workday of 13 hours<\/li>\n<li>Many tasks not related to care (fill the kerosene lamps, wash the windows, bring buckets of coal to ensure an even temperature in the rooms)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cCaring for the sick is a vocation! It has to be a calling! [\u2026] To devote yourself day and night, you have to sacrifice your strength, sometimes your health\u201d. \u2013 Religieuse de l\u2019\u00c9cole des garde-malades de l\u2019H\u00f4tel-Dieu de Montr\u00e9al, 1901[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4>1928-1962<\/h4>\n<h5>Emergence of health unions<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Annual salary: $2,600\u00a0for nurses (end of volunteering, except for students)<\/li>\n<li>Workweek of 40 hours (in split shifts, which required an almost continuous presence at the hospital)<\/li>\n<li>Dramatic situation of nursing unemployment<\/li>\n<li>Emergence of new personnel categories (social work, physio, occ therapy, dietitian, psychologist). Who used to do all that before?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first strike in public services, organized by the Alliance des infirmi\u00e8res de Montr\u00e9al (AIM) in 1957, at the h\u00f4pital Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur de Hull, and the threat of a strike at the H\u00f4tel-Dieu de Montr\u00e9al led to massive salary increases and a first regional collective agreement.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4>1963-1976<\/h4>\n<h5>Start of the public network and professionalization<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Annual salary: $8,600\u00a0for nurses | $6,600\u00a0for licensed practical nurses | $8,400 for respiratory therapists<\/li>\n<li>37.50-hour workweek<\/li>\n<li>About 70% of employees are part time or availability<\/li>\n<li>Significant increase in number of patients<\/li>\n<li>Beginning of mandatory overtime<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The one-month illegal strike, organized by AIM in 1963, at the H\u00f4pital Sainte-Justine, led to advances linked to workload by obtaining the implementation of a committee on care, a union action tool still relevant today!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4>1977 &#8211; 1994<\/h4>\n<h5>Start of budget cuts<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Annual salary: $35,000\u00a0for nurses | $17,000\u00a0for licensed practical nurses | $21,000\u00a0for respiratory therapists<\/li>\n<li>In 1983, the government decided to cut salaries by 20% for 3\u00a0months to save money<\/li>\n<li>36.25-hour workweek<\/li>\n<li>Job cuts and layoffs<\/li>\n<li>Work intensified<\/li>\n<li>Declining interest in the profession<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These difficult times prompted healthcare professional unions to join forces, leading to the creation of the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration des infirmi\u00e8res et infirmiers du Qu\u00e9bec (FIIQ), our predecessor!.<\/p>\n<p>Our illegal strikes in 1989 and 1999 put pressure on the government to convert replacement hours into positions. This resulted in the creation of 2,000 positions, representing approximately 4 million additional work hours per year.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4>1995 &#8211; 2003<\/h4>\n<h5>Ambulatory shift<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Annual salary: $45,000\u00a0for nurses | $35,000\u00a0for licensed practical nurses | $43,000 for respiratory therapists | $47,000\u00a0for clinical perfusionists<\/li>\n<li>Increase in the number of managers<\/li>\n<li>Mass retirement of 4,000 nurses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was from this period onwards that the labour shortage became a pretext for introducing the private sector in healthcare, thereby discrediting public services.<\/p>\n<p>The government proposed a reduction in the workweek to 32 hours for civil servants and wanted to cut pension plans in order to save money. The FIQ blocked Autoroute 15 and a 24-hour strike vote was organized by the inter-union committee to counter this affront, which ignored the number of hours actually worked.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4>2004 &#8211; 2025<\/h4>\n<h5>Reforms and centralization<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Annual salary: $90,000\u00a0for nurses | $75,000 for licensed practical nurses | $85,000\u00a0for respiratory therapists | $113,000\u00a0for clinical perfusionists<\/li>\n<li>37.50 to 40-hour workweek<\/li>\n<li>Management by MOT, contingency and non-replacement plans<\/li>\n<li>Significant job cuts<\/li>\n<li>Beginning of waiting lists for CHSLDs which overloaded hospitals<\/li>\n<li>Defunding of SADs and CLSCs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We warmly thank Couillard, Barrette and Dub\u00e9 for this legacy!<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the FIQ organized the first legal strike in the context of essential services, a mobilization which helped to curb the significant cutbacks demanded by the government.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2026 &#8211; ?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Deployment of safe ratios<\/li>\n<li>Massive investments in the frontline<\/li>\n<li>Improvement in prevention measures<\/li>\n<li>Promotion of healthcare professionals\u2019 work<\/li>\n<li>Easier work-family-life balance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is up to us to dream and take action to improve conditions in the network![\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The health network has greatly evolved over time.
