Standards of care are sometimes very high, yet specialist services are often far away and inaccessible by road.\u00a0Healthcare\u00a0professionals must therefore demonstrate\u00a0a high degree of adaptability and resourcefulness.\u00a0It is\u00a0phenomenal\u00a0what they manage to achieve with so\u00a0few resources at their\u00a0disposal.\u00a0And what stands out most?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A sense of belonging to their team that is becoming increasingly\u00a0rare in healthcare institutions in the\u00a0&#8216;South&#8217;.\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;12529&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;12538&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\r\n<h4>Major issues to resolve\u202f\u00a0<\/h4>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are also a number of challenges that healthcare professionals have to deal with, which warrant swift action on the part of the government.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fThe first is clear: access to decent housing that respects their privacy. With a housing shortage, substandard conditions and forced shared accommodation, healthcare\u00a0professionals have very little access to a home worthy of the name. Moreover, who would believe that in 2026, in Qu\u00e9bec, access to drinking water is not a basic right for everyone?\u00a0Well, this is not the case for many communities living in the\u00a0Far\u00a0North, where access varies greatly from one bay to another and from one village to another. Ultimately, having to work in outdated facilities is the reality for many healthcare professionals.\u00a0You don\u2019t need to be an expert to see that substantial investment is needed in the various facilities; it\u2019s as clear as day.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\r\n<h4>Safety should not be\u00a0optional\u202f\u00a0<\/h4>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Added to this is the issue of security, which is a constant theme in the discussions of healthcare professionals. The lack of suitable isolation rooms, the insufficient number of security guards,\u00a0most of whom are poorly trained,\u00a0and the fact that not all healthcare professionals have up-to-date OMEGA training are among the issues identified.\u202fThese are often very challenging workplaces where healthcare professionals are frequently left to deal with various crisis situations on their own.\u00a0Protecting these workers should be a priority for decision-makers. Working in a safe environment should not be optional.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is an overview of some key issues which, if taken seriously and addressed, would certainly help to make the Far North a more attractive destination for healthcare professionals. But more importantly, this would undoubtedly have a positive impact on staff retention.
