Should we wait for the next political, economic, environmental or public health crisis to demand change?<\/p>\n<p>The answers to these questions are very important, especially during an election campaign where there are so many debates on the issues. Health is political and healthcare professionals are on the front line to see the impacts of public policies on care. Inequality has repercussions on our daily lives, so either we put up with the consequences, or we take a stand for better care![\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Environment<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The health of the planet is inseparable from the health of the population and we can already feel the impacts of climate change:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Climate change<\/strong> :\u00a0841 deaths heat-related in summer of 2024 in Quebec<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> and 82,100 premature deaths in the world caused by Canada\u2019s forest fires in 2023<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Deterioration in water and air quality<\/strong> : For nearly 100 years in Rouyn-Noranda, the Horne Smelter has been discharging carcinogenic pollutants, and cancer rates are higher there<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Solutions: making coherent policy choices, investing in prevention and adapting the healthcare system to cope with extreme weather events.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> Institut national de sant\u00e9 publique du Qu\u00e9bec. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspq.qc.ca\/publications\/3662\"><em>Vagues de chaleur extr\u00eame et chaleur estivale au Qu\u00e9bec : impacts sur la sant\u00e9 de 2010 \u00e0 2024<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> The Canadian Press. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/vancouver\/bc-wildfires\/article\/study-estimates-2023-canadian-wildfire-smoke-caused-82000-premature-deaths-globally\/\"><em>Study estimates 2023 Canadian wildfire smoke caused 82,000 premature deaths globally<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref3\" name=\"_ftn3\">[3]<\/a> Institut national de sant\u00e9 publique du Qu\u00e9bec. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspq.qc.ca\/publications\/2875-risque-cancerigene-concentrations-arsenic-cadmium-air-rouyn-noranda\"><em>\u00c9valuation du risque canc\u00e9rig\u00e8ne attribuable aux concentrations d\u2019arsenic et de cadmium dans l\u2019air de la ville de Rouyn-Noranda<\/em><\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Housing<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When housing is too expensive, unsuitable or substandard, it has a profound and lasting impact on people\u2019s physical, mental and social health:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rise in homelessness<\/strong> : a 50% increase in the number of people visibly experiencing homelessness over three years in several regions of Quebec (Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue, Laurentians, C\u00f4te-Nord, Laval and Saguenay\u2013Lac-Saint-Jean)<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mold and vermin<\/strong> that cause respiratory problems (SOS &#8211; we need respiratory therapists!)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Less money to spend on food, heating, and living<\/strong> : more than 30% of people who live in unaffordable or inadequate housing can no longer afford the cost of food<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Solutions: strengthen local health services and access to mental health resources; take action at the source to regulate and hold uncooperative landlords to account; build social housing and offer support to at-risk people. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> Minist\u00e8re de la Sant\u00e9 et des Services sociaux. <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.msss.gouv.qc.ca\/msss\/document-003995\/\"><em>L\u2019itin\u00e9rance visible au Qu\u00e9bec et son \u00e9volution &#8211; R\u00e9sultats pr\u00e9liminaires de l\u2019exercice du d\u00e9nombrement 2025<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> Observatoire qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s. <a href=\"https:\/\/observatoiredesinegalites.com\/crise-du-logement-au-quebec-quels-effets-sur-linsecurite-alimentaire\/\"><em>Crise du logement au Qu\u00e9bec : quels effets sur l\u2019ins\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire?<\/em><\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Poverty <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>873,000 people had a low income in Quebec in 2023<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Poverty affects a person\u2019s health and poor health keeps them poor.
