And yet a diversity of voices is essential to a healthy democracy. As such, it is important to recognize and promote women who go into politics. Katia Cauchon talks about her dual role as licensed practical nurse and municipal councillor.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><em>\u201cPolitics may seem intimidating, but our experience as healthcare professionals is a tremendous strength. We know how to manage stress, make decisions, defend patients.\u201d<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13007\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fiqsante.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fiq-img-no-3-art-06-portrait-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fiqsante.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fiq-img-no-3-art-06-portrait-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fiqsante.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fiq-img-no-3-art-06-portrait-768x497.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.fiqsante.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fiq-img-no-3-art-06-portrait.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]In high school, Katia Cauchon already knew what she wanted to do: work in the healthcare field. Knowing this, she was quickly drawn to the profession of licensed practical nurse, and has now been practicing for nearly 20 years. \u201cI have this sense of empathy and a willingness to listen, and a desire to help people, and my parents instilled a respect for others in me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Engaged, articulate and driven by her strong sense of belonging to the town where she was born and raised, Katia decided to run for the position of municipal councillor in Ch\u00e2teau-Richer in 2017. \u201cJust because you\u2019ve chosen a career doesn\u2019t mean you have to stop there. Having parallel careers can be hugely beneficial, whether in the healthcare sector or in politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her colleagues from the CHU de Qu\u00e9bec could attest to this: \u201cI\u2019m very good at communicating with our managers. When it\u2019s time to argue our case or stand up for our working conditions, I\u2019m often the first to speak up,\u201d she explains with a laugh. Moreover, during the FIQ&#8217;s last round of negotiations, Katia took part in several mobilization actions, notably on the picket line during the strike.<\/p>\n<p>For her, there is no doubt about it: \u201cHealth is political, because every public decision that is made has a direct or indirect impact on patients\u2019 well-being, but also on the day-to-day working conditions of healthcare professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only do healthcare professionals have the opportunity to take on political roles, but they also have a great deal to contribute.<strong> If Katia has inspired her partner and her two children to get involved (as volunteers), let\u2019s hope her story will inspire you too!<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=&#8221;sky&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;]<strong>Women on Quebec\u2019s political scene in 2025:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All levels: 35.2% of elected representatives<\/li>\n<li>Federal (Quebec ridings): 33.3\u00a0% of MPs<\/li>\n<li>Provincial: 46.4\u00a0% of MNAs<\/li>\n<li>Municipal: 25.9\u00a0% of mayors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_message][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Going into politics [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Women are still under-represented in politics and healthcare professionals even more so!
