During his conference given at the 13<sup>th<\/sup> Convention of the FIQ, Professor <strong>Vincent Pasquier<\/strong> (HEC Montr\u00e9al) explained that <strong>artificial<\/strong> <strong>intelligence (AI) is already transforming our work, our professional relationships and the conditions in which we practise our profession.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While some uses of AI can <strong>support care<\/strong>, such as diagnostic assistance, wound monitoring or the automated drafting of clinical notes, others directly threaten <strong>professional autonomy, the quality of human relations and working conditions<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XboxCCk3bC8&#8243; el_width=&#8221;60&#8243; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Vincent Pasquier highlighted:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The arrival of <strong>algorithmic management<\/strong>, which monitors, evaluates and directs work (e.g. assigning schedules, controlling workloads, automated performance appraisals).<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>platformization of home care<\/strong>, where caregivers become \u2018service providers\u2019 governed by applications.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>risk of losing clinical skills<\/strong>, if we rely too much on recommendations from machines rather than on professional judgment.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>standardization of care<\/strong> to the detriment of human relationships, empathy and the ability to respond to unexpected situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AI is programed from human data and is therefore <strong>biased.<\/strong> Some technologies already under estimate the symptoms of racialized patients, as health studies have shown. These <strong>systemic biases can be detrimental to patient safety but also exacerbate discrimination in the workplace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>AI is not yet a widespread threat to healthcare professionals, but it is already transforming their tasks, their role and their recognition.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>The unions\u2019 role: take action early<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Vincent Pasquier was clear: <strong>the earlier the unions are involved, the better the transformations will be.<\/strong> To achieve this, he proposes four key projects:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Develop a clear union vision:<\/strong> what we accept or reject.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take stock<\/strong>: document the introduction of AI in our settings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adapt existing tools<\/strong>: agreements, committees, regulatory guidelines<\/li>\n<li><strong>Campaign for strong and inclusive regulation: <\/strong>insist that unions and healthcare professionals are involved from the very beginning in \u00a0developing AI tools.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Vigilance and union mobilization are essential if we are to ensure that the future of technology serves caregivers rather than replaces them. This conference revealed an indisputable fact: <strong>AI is already here.
