To justify this situation, the government claims there is a \u201clabour shortage,\u201d which allows it to absolve itself of responsibility for the catastrophic state of the RSSS. By saying there is a shortage, it frames the problem as inevitable rather than as the result of many years of bad political decisions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>The vicious circle of the intensification of work<\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In reality, since 1990, governments have turned to a management approach that aims to \u201cdo more with less\u201d to not \u201cwaste\u201d resources. But <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW1739276 BCX0\">more and more<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1739276 BCX0\"> are leaving <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1739276 BCX0\">the public network: <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1739276 BCX0\">the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1739276 BCX0\">ir<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1739276 BCX0\">presence in the RSSS <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW1739276 BCX0\">dropped from 85% to 72% between 1992 and 2022. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"LineBreakBlob BlobObject DragDrop SCXW1739276 BCX0\"><span class=\"SCXW1739276 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><br class=\"SCXW1739276 BCX0\" \/><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<strong>The shortfall\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">10,800 nurses would be working in the RSSS today if the proportion from 1992 had been maintained. This would have been a significant help given the ageing population and increasingly complex care needs!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<strong>The next generation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW75635564 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW75635564 BCX0\">43<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW75635564 BCX0\">% of nurses under age 35 who entered the profession in 2022<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW75635564 BCX0\"> left in the same year<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW75635564 BCX0\">. This data is worrying <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW75635564 BCX0\">regarding<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW75635564 BCX0\"> the retention of the next generation of nurses.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW75635564 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1758639872086{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #009FE3 !important;border-radius: 5px !important;}&#8221;]<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Did you know that? <strong>Since 2018, nearly 20 clinical perfusionists have left Quebec to go practice elsewhere. <\/strong>Considering that there are approximately 75 in the RSSS, this number represents a significant exodus. They leave because of the major pay gap with Ontario and the United States, and the extremely difficult working conditions in Quebec. For example, they are often obliged to work intensive on-call hours in addition to their regular work schedule.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"TextRun MacChromeBold SCXW39995582 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW39995582 BCX0\">Other impacts of the work crisis\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW39995582 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The work crisis is also reflected in the obligation for healthcare professionals to perform <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;any other related tasks&#8221;<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at the request of employers. Respiratory therapists experience this with the infamous \u2018technical units,\u2019 statistics they are required to compile but which add no value to patient care.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The impacts of this crisis are being felt in occupational health and safety: the number of licensed practical nurses absent due to disability and workplace accidents is alarming, and inadequate risk prevention by employers is partly to blame.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"TextRun MacChromeBold SCXW138476277 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW138476277 BCX0\">Courageous political choices to break the vicious cycle\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW138476277 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To put an end to the exodus and other consequences of the work crisis, we must stop using the \u201cshortage\u201d as an excuse for inaction. By prioritizing adequate workforce planning, in particular through the implementation of <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">safe ratios<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and good working and practice conditions, decision-makers would be focusing on long-term solutions to break the vicious cycle.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It&#8217;s a political choice that requires courage, no doubt about it!
