Healthcare Professionals’ Negotiations : The healthcare system is failing. We are the solution.
The FIQ kicked off its new ad campaign with the slogan “The healthcare system is failing. We are the solution.” as part of the negotiation process underway with the Quebec government to renew the collective agreement for its 76,000 members. Last night, the FIQ started its province-wide visual campaign with urban projections in four Quebec regions.
“If the government doesn’t move fast, this fall is going to hit record temperatures. Several actions are planned for the next few weeks in order to send a strong message to the government. Once you start failing, death isn’t far behind. The Health and Social Services Minister, Christian Dubé, and President of the Conseil du trésor, Sonia Lebel, have an opportunity to make history and literally save the health network. They’ll have to listen like none of their predecessors have before and implement front-line workers’ solutions, healthcare professionals’ solutions,” declared Nancy Bédard, FIQ President.
Promising solutions!
Enabling healthcare professionals to practice their full range of skills, work on stable, fully-staffed teams, and work within safe healthcare professional-to-patient ratios would be a huge step forward for both professionals and the quality of patient care. “With these concrete changes, the government would be showing full recognition for healthcare professionals’ essential contribution, significantly improving their working conditions and improving the quality of public care,” explained the President. For the FIQ, while negotiations are taking place in exceptional circumstances, the pandemic has enabled the population to better understand the sorry state the health network is in and the disastrous consequences that poor political decisions have had over the years. The FIQ is proposing the most promising solutions for the short, medium and long-term. “The first wave of COVID-19 showed that nurses’, licensed practical nurses’, respiratory therapists’, and clinical perfusionists’ demands over the years make sense and require that solutions be implemented immediately to resolve the problems that are chipping away at the health network,” said Denis Cloutier, President of the Syndicat des professionnelles en soins de l’est-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, one of the institutions chosen for the projections.
Where traditional management falls short
Les professionnelles en soins étaient déjà à bout de souffle avant le début de la pandémie, mais leur santé physique et mentale a été amenée à niveau de fragilité extrême au cours des derniers mois. « Les méthodes de gestion des 20 dernières années, axées sur des principes uniquement comptables, ont poussé le système de santé à l’échec, en introduisant toujours plus de mobilité et de flexibilité. Si nous voulons que la population québécoise puisse avoir accès à un système de santé public digne de ce nom, il faut que le gouvernement redonne les moyens de soigner à cette main-d’œuvre essentielle, composée majoritairement de femmes. Si nous ne voulons pas encore assister au départ de centaines de professionnelles comme ce fut le cas dans les derniers mois tout en étant en mesure d’attirer de la nouvelle main-d’œuvre dans le réseau, le gouvernement doit s’engager à offrir un système orienté sur la qualité et la sécurité des soins, et le respect de ses salariées », de poursuivre la présidente.
Pour la FIQ, il faut rapidement agir sur plusieurs fronts et une conclusion positive pour le renouvellement de la convention collective aurait plusieurs effets bénéfiques tant pour les professionnelles en soins que pour la population québécoise. « Nous convions monsieur Dubé et madame Lebel à participer activement à ce grand coup de barre et ainsi, régler de manière décisive le plus grand nombre de problèmes du réseau de la santé des vingt dernières années », de conclure madame Bédard.
