Support tool for candidates seeking elected positions

The fair representation of women in positions of power and decision-making is an important issue within our organization. Several members and union representatives have expressed the need for additional support to feel confident enough to run for and hold an elected position. In this context, we are making this support tool available to candidates to meet this need and facilitate the application process for women running for elected positions.

This tool should be considered as support for your application process. It is useful for all positions up for election. The questions are suggestions: you are not required to respond to all of them, and you can add or formulate your own questions. The example using the Status of Women Committee was chosen for information purposes. All of your responses will make up your introductory text, which may not exceed 360 words for candidates running for the Executive Committee, and 180 words for other committees.

1. Presentation

Your profession, workplace and number of years of experience.

Introduction example

I have been a licensed practical nurse at the Hôtel-Dieu for 5 years. Before that, I worked at the CHSLD La Pommeraie for 2 years.

2. Why are you running for Committee X?

What is your interest in the themes, work or activities of the committee in question? Specify one or more issues that appeal to you and why. (It is suggested that you give at least two reasons.)

Introduction example

I am running for the Status of Women Committee because I am deeply concerned about feminist issues. In recent years, I have been moved by movements denouncing sexual assault (#unreportedassault) and I find it unacceptable that people who experience sexual violence are still not believed.

3. What do you want to do on the committee?

Are there any initiatives you would like to lead on the committee? Do you have any ideas for actions the committee could take that you would like to see through to completion?

Introduction example

I am concerned about family-work-study balance. I am wondering about how to improve our conditions as healthcare professionals in this regard. In particular, I believe we should work to establish childcare services in the workplace.

4. What will your personal contribution be?

Do you have experience, skills or qualities that make you believe you would be a valuable addition to the team?

Introduction example

I have been involved in my workplace as a go-between. Moreover, my listening skills and determination will enable me to integrate the team and successfully complete projects.
