Vacation granted: more proof that mobilization works
16 April 2026Mobilization pays off. After days of mobilization and union pressure, the employer finally backed down: Mr. Gauthier’s pre-retirement vacation will officially start on April 26. A decision that should have been obvious from the outset, but which only became clear once the injustice came to light.
As the l’article de Noovo Info revealed, Mr. Gauthier, a licensed practical nurse with 37 years of service at the Centre de réadaptation en déficience physique de Charny, was refused his vacation request right before his retirement, due to a shortage of staff. An unacceptable situation, symptomatic of a rigid and dehumanized management style, where we all too often forget that behind the schedules and figures lie exhausted but deeply committed workers.
The FIQ – Syndicat des professionnelles en soins de Chaudière-Appalaches quickly denounced this decision and supported Mr. Gauthier in his efforts. Thanks to the solidarity of his colleagues – who demonstrated and launched a petition -, to union scrutiny and public pressure, the employer had no choice but to rectify the situation. This about-turn confirms once again that collective action is a powerful tool for ensuring our rights are upheld.
This victory, although important to Mr. Gauthier and his family, goes beyond his individual case. It sends a clear message: healthcare professionals will not remain silent in the face of arbitrary decisions and a lack of recognition.
The FIQ commends Mr. Gauthier’s courage and thanks everyone who helped bring about this change. Let’s stay mobilized: every victory we achieve together strengthens our ability to achieve further victories.
