You have contracted a GI bug at work?

The symptoms start suddenly… This illness, though benign, but very unpleasant, comes out ofnowhere: GASTROENTERITIS! It is one of the major nosocomial infections in the hospital settingbecause that setting is a fertile ground for contamination by direct contact.

When the contamination occurs in the performance of your work and you have to be absent, thereshould be no resulting loss of salary and the employer must assume compensation. Whether youcontracted it from a patient, a colleague, a physician, a visitor or anyone else in your institution, you are entitled to the compensation stipulated in an Act respecting industrial accidents andoccupational diseases (AIAOD).

What must be done? First, you must inform your employer by completing the declaration of awork accident or occupational disease form provided by the latter. Be as clear as possible in thedescription of the circumstances of the event in order to clearly establish the connection betweenyour contamination and the work performed. Indicate the date, hour, contaminant, the presenceor not of an outbreak of gastroenteritis at work and any other pertinent factor including witnesses,if applicable. Your symptoms may only have appeared after you left work. In this case, inform youremployer as soon as possible and complete the form when you return. The employer may require amedical certificate. Be sure to provide it in a reasonable time limit in order to reduce the chances ofcontestation.

As gastroenteritis is very contagious, it is preferable that you not go to work once symptoms appearuntil they have completely disappeared, in order to avoid spreading the disease.

Having said that, good luck and keep hydrated!
